Masdar to build wind farms\ with a capacity of 500 MW in Navoi region

One of the leading international renewable energy companies – «Masdar» (UAE) will build in the Navoi region one of the largest wind farms in the world with a capacity of 500 MW.

The ceremony of signing the investment agreement between the Emirati company and the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade took place on 8 June 2020, according to which «Masdar» company will provide design, financing, construction and operation of the wind farm.

This is the second major project carried out by this company in the Republic of Uzbekistan – in October of last year «Masdar» won tenders for the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant in the Navoi region on the basis of a public-private partnership. The relevant agreements for the implementation of this project were signed in January 2020.

The construction and continued operation of the wind farm will have a positive impact on the country’s economy.

First of all, the project attracted more than $600 million in foreign direct investment. In addition, 1,300 new jobs were created both during the construction phase and during its subsequent operation.

The wind power station will also make it possible to diversify and strengthen the Republic’s energy balance by generating 1.9 hWh of affordable electricity per year, equivalent to the consumption of more than 500,000 households.

The introduction of modern renewable energy technologies will also contribute to reducing the amount of natural gas used to generate electricity (to 175 million cubic metres per year) and divert it to other uses. Last but not least Significant reduction of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere (1.1 million tn per year).

Construction work is scheduled to begin before the end of this year with the first generation capacity (up to 250 MW) in mid-2022 and all capacity by the end of 2023.
