The Fergana Valley is the most densely populated part of Central Asia with almost 14 million inhabitants \u2013 almost 20 per cent of the region\u2019s population \u2013 spread across Uzbekistan, the\u00a0Kyrgyz Republic\u00a0and\u00a0Tajikistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The EBRD is opening an office in this region recognising the area\u2019s significant potential. The Andijan office will mainly be supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through expert advice, training and a variety of financial tools.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It will be building on the success of the EBRD\u2019s\u00a0business advisory programme, funded by the European Union and the\u00a0EBRD Small Business Impact Fund\u00a0(with contributions from Italy, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg, Sweden, Switzerland, Taipei China and the USA), which has already delivered almost 70 advisory projects for Uzbek SMEs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Following the adoption of a\u00a0new country strategy\u00a0for Uzbekistan, in 2018 the EBRD signed 12 projects worth almost \u20ac400 million, a record level of business for the Bank in the country in a single year. Significant investments were made in the municipal and power infrastructure sectors, including the rehabilitation of water and wastewater infrastructure in the Fergana Valley, as well as in banking and industry. This year, the EBRD has already invested almost \u20ac250 million into the national economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To date, the EBRD has invested \u20ac1.3 billion through 70 projects in the economy of\u00a0Uzbekistan.
