The Presidents of Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan held the third meeting of the Supreme Intergovernmental Council

At the Kuksaroy Residence, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev held a restricted-format meeting and the third meeting of the Supreme Intergovernmental Council, the press service of the head of our state reports.

The parties discussed further deepening Uzbekistan–Azerbaijan strategic partnership and alliance relations.

The head of state particularly emphasized that the current state visit of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan is a historic event.

“This will be confirmed by the signing of the Treaty of Eternal Friendship following the summit. Most importantly, every element of our strategic partnership and alliance is being translated into concrete, tangible actions,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.

The leaders noted the dynamic development of bilateral ties. Close contacts have been established between the parliaments, governments and sectoral agencies of the two countries.

As part of preparations for the visit, a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, the Business Council and the Regions Forum were successfully held.

Over the past five years, bilateral trade has tripled. Cooperation projects are being implemented in energy, chemicals, mining, textiles, agriculture, urban development and other sectors.

The parties noted the potential to increase bilateral trade to $1 billion. The basis for achieving this important target will be the adoption of a program containing specific measures to reach this level.

New cooperation projects will be launched during the meeting. The importance of actively attracting funds from the Joint Investment Company to support such initiatives was emphasized.

The need to strengthen connectivity between the two countries and jointly develop the Middle Corridor was highlighted.

The leaders agreed to continue active exchanges in culture, education, youth policy and sports.

Today, the new building of the Nizami Ganjavi National Pedagogical University will be opened, and construction of the “Azerbaijan” Park in New Tashkent will begin.

To further strengthen ties between the two peoples, it was proposed to create a joint film titled “The Literary Bridge between Nizami Ganjavi and Alisher Navoi.”

The second Forum of Rectors of Leading Universities will be held in Azerbaijan this autumn.

In 2027, an important sporting event — the FIFA U-20 World Cup — will be held in the two countries. In this context, a large-scale “Two Countries – One Championship” program will be developed, providing for joint sporting, cultural and youth events.

The heads of state also exchanged views on current international and regional issues.

Reports by the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission were heard.

Following the meeting, it was decided to adopt a “road map” to ensure the timely and high-quality implementation of the agreements reached.

At the conclusion of the meeting, joint projects were launched in banking and finance, construction materials production, education, the oil and gas sector, tourism, housing construction, mining and agriculture.
