Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection Narzullo Oblomuradov and Director of the Department for Nuclear Safety of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Baltazar Lindauer signed an Agreement on the implementation of a grant project to support the country’s efforts in carrying out work on the reclamation of special sites Charkesar and Yangiabad.
The signing ceremony for the €7 million Grant Agreement took place at the EBRD Headquarters in London on 1 September 2022.
In 2021, the State Committee for Ecology and the EBRD signed the first grant agreement for the provision of consulting services in the amount of
2 million euros. The grant project with a total amount of 9 million euros will be financed by the bank from a special fund of the Environmental Remediation Account for Central Asia (CRA).
Within the framework of the grant project, during 2022-2025, activities will be carried out for environmental rehabilitation and reclamation of special sites.
On the basis of an independent expertise and a comprehensive environmental assessment of risks and local conditions, specialists have chosen the safest and best options and plans for reclamation of the territory, construction, installation, insulation and protective works.
The reclamation is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2023 and will be completed in about two years.
Construction and rehabilitation works will be carried out under the supervision of local and German experts.
It should be noted that the local population will receive significant benefits from the implementation of this project, which has a social orientation. Improving the sanitary and environmental situation in the near future will contribute to the sustainable development of the territory, attracting additional investment in agriculture and other industries, as well as developing the tourism and ecotourism potential of the regions, increasing employment and incomes of the local population.
According to the press service of the State Committee for Ecology, following the results of the visit, the parties agreed on the obligations of the parties to implement the project.
