On October 16 this year, a meeting with the Kimberley Process expert mission was held in Tashkent, dedicated to the issues of diamond trade and the prevention of trade in ‘‘conflict diamonds’’, the press service of the MIIT reports.
During the event, Uzbekistan’s commitment to participation in the Kimberley Process was confirmed as an important step towards responsible and transparent regulation of trade in natural resources.
The parties discussed measures to increase transparency in the economy of Uzbekistan and the development of domestic jewelry production. The adopted Presidential Decree No. UP-104 of 23.07.2024 “On measures for further development of jewelry production and ensuring its competitiveness” is aimed at accelerating the country’s accession to the Kimberley Process.
It was noted that for successful integration into the Kimberley Process system, it is necessary to create conditions for the import of rough diamonds, which is a priority for the further development of the jewelry industry.
In conclusion, mutual readiness for further active cooperation was expressed, including for the purpose of introducing additional mechanisms for monitoring and controlling the diamond trade in Uzbekistan.
