President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation of proposals for developing the automotive industry, expanding production capacity, and enhancing its competitiveness, the press service of the head of our state reports.
It’s no coincidence that our country places special emphasis on the development of the automotive industry. This sector plays a vital role in creating high added value, fostering industrial cooperation, creating thousands of jobs, and expanding export opportunities.
In recent years, Uzbekistan’s automotive industry has entered a completely new stage of development, focused on competition and consumer interests. While ten years ago the automotive market was associated with a single manufacturer and long lines, today, five automobile factories have been established in partnership with major brands such as Chevrolet, BYD, KIA, and Hyundai.
Most importantly, these changes are being directly felt by the population. The market selection has expanded, and long lines have disappeared. This year, 20 banks were involved in financing car purchases, resulting in 95 percent of cars being sold through installment plans and affordable lending.
At the same time, the production of automobiles and components targeting neighboring markets is developing. New cooperation chains are forming around the industry, and over 10,000 young specialists are working using modern technologies. Over 300 companies supply components to Chevrolet, and approximately 40 companies supply components to KIA and BYD.
The presentation discussed the achievement of the goal of achieving a million-strong automotive industry in terms of both production volume and employment.
The receipt of a large number of project proposals for the production and assembly of passenger cars and commercial vehicles indicates that a favorable investment climate and a highly liquid market are developing in Uzbekistan. It was also emphasized that each project should be assessed based on market demand and cost effectiveness, with the primary focus on ensuring competitiveness in foreign markets.
The presentation presented information about the Volkswagen automobile production project. According to the plan, the first stage involves the launch of a semi-knocked-down assembly plant in Tashkent. The next stage is planned to establish a full production cycle in the Angren Free Economic Zone, increase localization, and enter foreign markets.
It was noted that the current global situation is significantly impacting the automotive industry. In this regard, the need to ensure technological independence, implement innovation, and begin developing a competitive national product less dependent on export and logistical constraints was emphasized.
It was noted that modern engineering schools have been opened in Andijan and Jizzakh, a new generation of young researchers and engineers is being formed, and overall, the necessary intellectual potential for a domestic brand exists.
To this end, a decision was made to develop research and development activities within the Uzavtosanoat JSC system.
It was noted that the auto components market represents another major opportunity in the industry.
In this regard, the need to streamline the components market, increase the share of locally produced products, improve the certification system, and create modern testing laboratories was emphasized. The goal has been set to develop a strategy for the development of the automotive spare parts market by the end of 2026, involving international consulting firms.
The President of our country emphasized that the automotive industry is one of the strategic sectors of the national economy and gave specific instructions to strengthen competition, deepen localization, and develop a national engineering school in the industry.
