Reconstruction of Andijan International Airport’s second phase is progressing at an accelerated pace

Andijan International Airport is acquiring a modern appearance and expanding its capabilities. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to the region began with an inspection of the development work being carried out at the facility, the press service of the head of our state reports.

During the President’s visit to the region three years ago, he issued instructions to modernize the airport. He also personally reviewed the progress of the reconstruction during last year’s visit.

The airport was commissioned in 1978 and was granted international status in 2013. The facility, covering a total area of 243.4 hectares, employs 100 people. Over time, there arose a need to bring the airport in line with modern requirements, enhance passenger comfort, and expand the geography of flights.

The total cost of the airport complex reconstruction project amounts to 1.1 trillion soums. During the first stage, the airport’s infrastructure was completely upgraded. The runway was extended to 3.3 kilometers, and a new 60-meter-wide runway meeting Category 4E requirements was also constructed. In addition, taxiways and aircraft parking stands capable of accommodating 10 aircraft were installed.

Particular attention has been paid to the quality of construction and ensuring the facility’s long service life. A durable concrete pavement designed to last up to 50 years was laid on the runway. A high-precision, German-made airfield lighting system was installed. This enables the airport to safely receive aircraft at night and in conditions of dense fog. Aircraft can land even when visibility is reduced to 300 meters. The airport is now capable of receiving large wide-body aircraft without any restrictions.

The second stage of the reconstruction is currently underway. As part of this stage, a modern two-story terminal building with a total area of 19,685 square meters is being constructed. While the airport previously handled up to 200 passengers per hour, this figure will increase fivefold once the new terminal is commissioned. A high-speed Wi-Fi network and smart services will also be introduced at the airport.

The President was presented with the airport’s development concept. The President instructed the responsible officials to ensure the timely and high-quality completion of the construction of the modern terminal building.

Currently, regular flights operated by seven airlines connect Andijan International Airport with domestic and international destinations. In the future, the number of flights is planned to increase from 808 to 2,500 per year, while the airport’s annual passenger capacity is expected to reach 3.5 million passengers.

It was noted that the ongoing work will help improve transport accessibility for residents and visitors of Andijan region, as well as unlock the region’s economic and tourism potential. Instructions were given to develop modern service facilities near the airport and improve the quality of services provided.
