ACWA Power invests $88 million in “green” hydrogen production

According to the report of Spot, at the EBRD business forum in Samarkand, ACWA Power signed an agreement on a green hydrogen production project.

The state concern Uzkimyosanoat, which acted as the second party to the agreement, published some details of the investment project. Its total cost is tentatively estimated at $88 million.

With this money, the Saudi company plans to install a 20 MW water electrolyzer that will directly produce hydrogen. Electricity for its operation will be generated by 52 MW wind turbines.

The estimated production capacity will be 3,000 tons of hydrogen annually. In addition, ACWA Power intends to organize its processing to produce “green” urea.

The ACWA-UKS GH2 joint venture will manage the project. The Saudi side in it will own a share of 80%, the Uzbek side – 20%.

The plans of ACWA Power to launch the generation of “green” hydrogen in Uzbekistan became known at the beginning of the year. The company intends to set up a process at the ammonia plant in Chirchik in order to produce ammonia and other products from it on site.

Back in 2021, the Ministry of Energy signed agreements with ACWA and the American Air Products on the development of hydrogen energy in Uzbekistan. In August 2022, the parties signed another agreement – on the industrial production of “green” hydrogen.
